Five days into the U23 World Championships in Las Vegas, Team USA has six medals in hand, two men wrestling for gold tonight, and its five biggest names in men's freestyle just getting started. Here's where everything stands.
Greco-Roman: A Tough Start to the Week
Greco opened the tournament Monday and finished 10-10 without a medal. Nine of the 10 Americans won at least one match, and two made quarterfinal runs:
- Michael Altomer (87kg) beat China 8-1 and teched Japan's Daichi Oka 9-0 before falling to Norway's Martin Ljosaak.
- Aden Attao (130kg) pinned his first two opponents before Kazakhstan's Jokhar Uzarov stopped him in the quarters.
Brett Back (72kg) delivered one of the best moments of the week, pinning Japan's Rintaro Sogabe in 1:46.
Women's Freestyle: Six Medals, Two World Titles
The U.S. women were the story of the first half of the week. Ten wrestlers, six medals, a combined 22-8 record.
Kylie Welker (76kg, Iowa) was untouchable: four wins, three tech falls and a 65-second pin, capped by a 10-0 tech in 47 seconds in the final. It's her third straight U23 World title, which FloWrestling noted no American woman had done before.
Cristelle Rodriguez-Dobler (53kg, Doane) won the other gold, grinding out a 3-1 semifinal over Ukraine before pinning Turkey's Sevval Cayir in 55 seconds. It's her second World title after U20 gold in 2024.
Adaugo Nwachukwu (62kg, William Penn) teched her first three opponents and won her semi 3-1 before taking silver, the best World finish of her career.
Bronzes went to Morgan Turner (50kg), the lone high schooler on the roster, plus Iowa's Everest Leydecker (55kg) and Reese Larramendy (65kg). That's three of the six medals from Iowa's women's program.
Men's Freestyle Day 1: Two Into the Finals
The U.S. came in as the defending men's freestyle team champion after edging Iran 137-127 last year, and Friday put them right back in the mix.
Ben Davino (61kg, Ohio State) was dominant: 7-1 over Iran's Ebrahim Khari, an 11-0 tech over Japan's Akito Mukaida, then a 10-0 tech over Oregon State's Gabe Whisenhunt, who's wrestling for Romania. That's 28-1 on the scoreboard. Tonight he gets Kyrgyzstan's Iukhan Dokturbek Uulu for gold.
Jayden James (74kg, Penn State) had the moment of the night. He opened with a pin, beat Uzbekistan 8-0 and Moldova 7-4, then pinned Iran's Ali Karampour in 2:48 while leading 10-2 in the semis. After U20 World silver this summer, he gets Russia's Magomed Baitukaev for gold.
Coby Merrill (125kg, Iowa State) teched Armenia's Khachatur Khachatryan before falling to Georgia's Aleksandre Abramishvili. Abramishvili then teched his way into the final, pulling Merrill into repechage against Canada's Karanveer Singh Mahil. Win that, and he wrestles for bronze tonight.
Seth Shumate (92kg, Ohio State) won his first two, including an 11-0 tech, before an injury default in the quarterfinals. Aeoden Sinclair (86kg, Missouri), the reigning U20 World champ, dropped his opener 13-6 to Moldova's Eugeniu Mihalcean.
Championship Saturday: The Final Five
Today's session starts at 1:30 PM ET, with semis at 7:45 PM ET. Medal matches for these five weights are Sunday at 4 PM ET.
57kg: Luke Lilledahl (Penn State). The reigning U23 World champ goes for back-to-back titles, and he's made the gold-medal match in all five of his age-group World appearances. He opens against Kazakhstan's Merey Bazarbayev. A win likely sets up a quarterfinal against the winner of Gambia's Sulayman Bah, a Columbia senior out of the Bronx, and the France/Puerto Rico qualifier.
65kg: Bo Bassett (Virginia Tech). Already the U20 World champ this year, Bassett starts his chase for a second World title of the fall before heading to Senior Worlds. His first opponent is the winner of Romania's Sandu and Canada's Brown. Brown is Ohio State freshman Karson Brown out of St. Edward, so we could see a Hokie vs. Buckeye matchup in the Round of 16. Iran's Ahora Khateri and Turkey's Yusuf Tumer are also in the field.
70kg: Jordan Williams (Iowa). The 2026 U23 Pan Am champ makes his World debut against Spain's Denis Kodakov Gil in qualification. A win sends him to India's Sumit Bharaskar in the Round of 16.
79kg: Joe Sealey (Penn State). The 2022 U17 World champ opens against India's Chandermohan, with Brazil's Kydyn Luk Correa Lima waiting in the Round of 16. Also in the 79kg field: Nebraska's Chris Minto, InterMat's No. 2 at 174, wrestling for Jamaica.
97kg: Justin Rademacher (Oregon State). The 2025 U20 World champ gets a bye into the Round of 16 and will face the winner of Mongolia's Tumurbaatar and Belarus' Kazlou.
Tonight at 9 PM ET: Gold
Davino vs. Dokturbek Uulu. James vs. Baitukaev. Possibly Merrill for bronze. Two Americans guaranteed at least silver, and a chance for Team USA to grab two more World titles on home soil.
