Team USA's Greco-Roman run at the 2026 Senior World Championships in Astana is over. The 10-man squad went 3-13 with no medals, and only two Americans made it past their opening match. It was closer than the record suggests, though: five of the losses came by two points or fewer.
Weight by Weight
- 55kg: Max Nowry (1-2). Opened with a tech fall over Tajikistan's Nazarmamad Rakhmonbekov, then lost to Iran's Payam Ahmadi Balootaki in the round of 16. Pulled back into repechage, where India's Lalit beat him 7-0.
- 60kg: Dalton Roberts (0-1). Lost by tech fall to Romania's Razvan Arnaut in the round of 16.
- 63kg: Xavier Johnson (0-2). Both of his matches ended in injury defaults, to Azerbaijan's Nihat Mammadli in qualification and to Norway's Morten Thoresen in repechage.
- 67kg: Otto Black (1-2). Lost to Uzbekistan's Aytjan Khalmakhanov in qualification but got a second life in repechage. He teched Australia's Tsuchika Shimoyamada 9-0, then fell 7-4 to Cuba's Luis Orta Sanchez.
- 72kg: Benjamin Peak (1-1). Beat Belarus' Aliaksandr Liavonchyk 4-1, then lost a one-point match to Russia's Mingiian Goriaev, 5-4, in the round of 16. Goriaev lost in the semifinals, so there was no repechage.
- 77kg: Joel Adams (0-1). Lost 3-1 to Bulgaria's Stoyan Kubatov.
- 82kg: Kamal Bey (0-1). Lost 4-2 to China's Halishan Bahejiang.
- 87kg: Beka Melelashvili (0-1). Pinned by Croatia's Ivan Huklek in the round of 32.
- 97kg: Tim Young (0-1). Lost 4-3 to Croatia's Matej Mandic.
- 130kg: Cohlton Schultz (0-1). Lost 1-1 on criteria to Egypt's Abdellatif Mohamed in the round of 16.
So Close, So Often
The margins tell the story. Schultz lost on criteria at 1-1. Peak lost by one point to a Russian who reached the semifinals. Young lost by one, and Adams and Bey each lost by two. Turn a couple of those around and the week looks very different.
Only Nowry and Black got second chances through repechage, and both came up a win short of a bronze-medal match.
