Weigh-ins are done and the Super 32 high school boys brackets are set, and they look noticeably different from the seed list MatScouts released earlier this week. We went through all 14 weights, comparing every seeded wrestler on the MatScouts seed sheet with the brackets posted on FloWrestling. Here's what changed.
The quick numbers: 76 wrestlers seeded by MatScouts don't appear in any bracket, and another 35 are entered at a different weight than they were seeded. Most of the missing names were seeded in the 20s and 30s, but several were projected finalists.
The Headliners Not in the Brackets
132: Paul Kenny. The MatScouts P4P No. 8 and 1 seed isn't in the bracket. That moves Israel Borge to the top line, and both MatScouts pickers, Hoyt Matthews and Willie Saylor, already had Borge winning the weight.
215: Mick Moylan. The 1 seed is out, and Max Konopka now sits at No. 1 on Flo's bracket. Willie picked Konopka to win it in the MatScouts preview.
113: Evan Restivo. The 2 seed and No. 2 wrestler on the first-ever 2030 Big Board isn't entered, so there's no chance at a freshman final between Restivo and Spencer Lee. Kooper Deputy stays on top.
120: Jovanni Tovar and Sean Kenny. The 2 and 3 seeds are both out. With Paul Kenny also missing at 132, neither Kenny brother appears in the brackets.
165: Rocco Cassioppi. The 2 seed isn't entered, and at 175, Bruno Cassioppi isn't either.
175: Three of the top four seeds are out. Maximus Dhabolt (2), Joe Bachmann (3) and Bruno Cassioppi (4) aren't in any bracket. Bachmann was expected to move up to 190, but he doesn't appear there either. Justus Heeg remains the 1 seed.
285: Bruno Pallone. The 2 seed and Hoyt's pick to win the weight isn't in the bracket. Carter Brown stays at No. 1.
Also not in the brackets: Sonny Amato (150, 3 seed), Rylen Wax (106, 4 seed) and Jorge Rios (126, 4 seed).
The Biggest Move: Grajeda to 157
The most interesting change might not be a scratch at all. Jesse Grajeda, seeded first at 144 and No. 9 on the MatScouts P4P, is entered at 157 as the 3 seed.
That turns 157 into the weight to watch. Mac Crosson is the 1 seed and Cam Howard the 2, with Grajeda at 3. Seeds 2 and 3 land on the same side of the bracket, so a Howard vs. Grajeda semifinal is possible, with the winner potentially getting Crosson in the final. According to MatScouts, Crosson beat Howard at the Junior Trials in May.
With Grajeda gone, Matty O'Neill moves up to the 1 seed at 144.
Other Notable Weight Changes
- Miklo Hernandez: 132 to 126 (Flo 4 seed)
- Cooper Mathews: 138 to 132 (4 seed)
- Landyn Shaffer: 138 to 144 (6 seed)
- Zane Gerlach: 175 to 165 (6 seed)
- Nico DeSalvo: 150 to 157 (8 seed)
- Gage Bjerga: 144 to 138 (10 seed)
- Eddie Woody: 132 to 138 (11 seed)
- Patrick Bulger: 113 to 120 (15 seed)
- Amir Newman-Winfrey: 106 to 113 (17 seed)
The Hardest-Hit Weights
165 has the most seeded wrestlers missing (10), followed by 126 (8), then 113, 144 and 175 (7 each). At the other end, 190 and 215 lost only two or three each.
What It Means for the Picks
Of Willie's 14 projected champions, Joe Bachmann at 190 isn't in the bracket, and Grajeda is now at 157 instead of 144, where Willie had picked him to win. Hoyt loses Restivo at 113 and Pallone at 285, and his 144 pick was also Grajeda.
Several picks got easier. Borge (132) and Konopka (215) both move up to the 1 seed after the scratches above them.
